Gulf Futurism - A Portal To The Future

First articulated by Qatari artist and writer Sophia al-Maria, Gulf Futurism, in its simplest form, is an art movement that recognizes and reflects the region's hyper-modernization and its impact on local culture. With themes that often reflect petro-capitalism and the over-optimistic world-building by the dominant class.

More than 200 nationalities make up the population of the Gulf, an intricate and evolving patchwork of cultures, religions and social classes. For the average person, what does Gulf Futurism mean? We posed this question to our artists, each of whom calls the UAE home, as an open brief. Their pieces are an initmate reflection of the future, expressed as loss and longing, techno-formed identities and the very human need to connect.
